I am halfway through Antarctica and I have yet to have a plane shot down. I don't think I've even got close. Is there any reason to upgrade defensive components on planes?

Yes, planes are important in alpha and epsilon. Almost all aliens there have strong anti air defe. Except bases (try to attack these). When loosing health the damage amount becomes lower. No need to pay medals but gold bought components are in place

Ofc you can also use a lot of core to give them shield. Will be interested whether the shield regenerator does work for planes.. I think health addition by angel is working on planes.. So only repair kit doesnt

Aircraft Strategies in Alien Levels
1# - Use only your Aircrafts on alien units with no anti-air defense, unless it is an objective.
2# - Aircrafts are best used in "popping" remaining shields left of alien units, using high-damaging units to finish them.
3# - It's crucial for you to capture any airport to gain access to aircrafts for more firepower.
4# - Be efficient on using air damage, don't use big air damage on a dying alien unit.

# Engine
# Coating
# Radar
# HE Ammo
To counter Aliens units effectively
