I am comfused because sometimes I read here only one general is enough for the campaign to play, and other time we are told you need 4 best generals to make it and so forth.
How do you know many you need? Can you finish the game with just one or two?

It depends on what you consider finishing. I am always trying to win 5 stars and mostly do it within first attempt. But for a simple win you have much more time
I finished "coalition" with 2 generals (Zakrowsky and Dobeln). 5 stars were most of the time easy to get. Those generals were important because of mass fire. You need units that wont get weaker over time.
Second was "Imperial Eagle". In the middle I bought Golitsyn and bought him a snare drum. He changed a lot. Before I sometimes I needed good planning, because the time limit can be really tight. Since that moment I nearly dont need to think anymore.
Now I do HRE and got a art general. Nice, but it doesnt make a big difference anymore. Simply too slow. I also got Isabella, but never used her in campaign so far, though she is really great. Her speed should once again be a game changer.
2 generals should be enough for finishing all and most with 5 stars. Mass fire / snare drum is the key. But not with simply rushing into the enemy. Take a look at the guide section upon AI behaviour. It will male many things easier. After that you should be able to finish all with Dobeln and Golitsyn. Oh, and just with those 2 guys I did 1789 HRE within 32 rounds. And below 30 was possible with better planning.

U need to have four generals to property complete the game, less generals mean that some time u will get stuck in the game like I got few days back, the best is to go for princesses since they are free.

Who ever finished the game with less than 4 generals? Without paying it might be impossible.
The sun never set campaign will kick your rear even with 4 generals that are ranked+noble+have the best items.
The nice thing about European war 4 is the difficulty is very steady,so at 1st you don't even need a general but by the end game most players need 4-6 of them.

It depends on how bad-*Auto corrected* your generals are. Up to Eastern Overlords campaign using 4 good generals is plenty for 5 stars on all missions. But it gets significantly harder in the USA and British campaigns so getting 5 stars with 4 generals is very difficult.

To finish game,I think 6 no less. To start 1 or 2 is enough.
