Paladin it is.
It has no meaning,it's just that most people rather have something to look at instead of a blank generic empty image.
There is the ability to upload a few default avatars in the forums so members can choose one instead of having to upload or build their own.
I am thinking I should take a look at that.

Yeah google image search works great,but if the image was more than just cropped like if it was altered or just passed through basic filters then google will most likely not find it.
