I'd like to start off this little series with a recent acquisition of mine on the NES.
This game was made by a certain Canadian developer by the name of Sid Meier, who, by the way, made the ungodly good game Civilization.
In the game, you play as a privateer from either England, Spain, Holland, or France. You have the choice of specializing in either fencing, navigation, charm, or medicine. All of this determines your procedurally generated background, starting position, and ship.
The graphics are pretty good for an 80s game, but the soundtrack is... lacking... there is only one song and it plays on startup only. So, the game can get very quiet.
The gameplay is phenomenal. You can do anything from host land expeditions to stealing cities from other powers, becoming a famous and wealthy merchant, to becoming a nationless pirate. You can gain rank in your nation and eventually gain the last military rank of Admiral and move into nobility.
Eventually, you can retire with your decided outcome based off your relations to Governors, the Crown, your land and your money. If you reconsider, it will bring you to the Hall of Fame with the option of coming back from retirement but ONLY just the first time when it forces you into it.
My description is VERY brief and does this great game NO justice at all. So if you want more details just ask. Its a really good game.
Note: Do not play this on an emulator or in browser edition, they are glitched to hell or just knock offs. You need to play it on a console or a CD PC copy. If your looking for the authentic original version, in color or b&w it costs around 20 Euros and are easiest to find in America and Canada, and are best experienced on NES. Absolutely do not play the Sega Genesis version, as it is too glitched to function.

For those of you who like strategy games I'd recommend Rise of Nations Extended Edition (rerelease on Steam). One of my favorite games as a kid, allows you to play anytime from before domestication of animals to the near future. 4x game.

I'm a retro gamer, got plenty of N64 games running by an emulator on my laptop (twice, if including my previous laptop). Also runs an emulator for PS1. And as for old PC games, I use DOSbox. Gotta love the classics!

Gotta love the classics! I tried DOsBox for Daggerfall to no avail. I just obtained my mothers NES and I'm starting a vintage game collection.

Ouch, depending on the value of a particular title, an addiction to crack could be cheaper than collecting vintage games on original media. Don't want to derail too much, isn't Daggerfall an old Mac game converted into an old PC game? If so, you may have a better chance of success with mac emulation on your PC (I got one finally up and running after 10 hours of insane frustration).

I already read up alot about vintage game collecting. I have a vendor that I trust who tests and checks for cracks and whatnot on the cartridge.

Alright never mind. I had heard of it vaguely. So I was wondering which platforms it was released on. During the 90s, the multiple-releases had differing quality between releases on different platforms a lot more divergent than the modern games now. The mac releases were notorious for difficulty in working in a Mac that had slight different specs (far worse than what PC-users went through), but the graphic quality was frequently superior in 90s. Nowadays, it's possible to emulate both old PCs or Macs (harder than PCs imho). Back to the vintage stuff... it's not a cheap habit to develop. Of course, best of luck to you.

The Pirates game was actually released on Commodore in Black and White in the 80s before it hit consoles... in the 90s. It was ported to Xbox and then it kinda died down a little. Probably Sid Meiers 2nd biggest accomplishment behind the Civilization series. Most NES games here are only 5 to 30 Euro so its not TOO bad... fun to play too.

Those two are probably the two best places to find something in English. I would also recommend AbeBooks but I'm not sure if they do sell zines, but used books, a definite yes.

Gotta love the classics! I actually OWN an N64 with a few games. I found it a local game store in my area for only like $40 bucks, plus like ten per game. I got an N64 plus three games for $70, money which i had for my birthday. Now its hooked up right next to my Gamecube and my Wii U
