There is a difference between Liberty and Freedom which few know of. Today I will teach you of it in connection to the US Civil war
1. Liberty:
Liberty, coming from the French
Liberté, which in turn comes from the Latin
Libertas, entails what we think of as human rights, but only to some. Those some are normally male landowners. As such,
Libertas fully allows for Slavery and such institutions
2. Freedom:
Freedom, coming from the German
Freiheit entails essentially the same rights as
Libertas, but to everyone. Everyone is born with
Freiheit. Therefore,
Freiheit does not allow for Slavery
In the United States in the years and decades before the civil war, the Abolitionists (Anti-slavery groups) believed in a concept corresponding mostly to
Freiheit, and the supporters of slavery believed in a concept more related to
Libertas.
The difference between these concepts is behind one of America's bloodiest wars, and yet they are used interchangeably
