Anyone that did used to play it is still playing StarCraft? Either the first one (Brood War) or the current one (Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void)?
I personally remember Brood War with fondness...
I have a no-install copy of Brood War on my USB drive and on a CD-R. Occasionally I find a friend of mine who either misses the old days or wants to try it out, I would let them make a copy onto their hard drives.
Of course, it's pointless to connect to Battle.net since it has been discontinued for BW and moved onto SC2. If a friend and I are on the same LAN/WIFI, we can connect through the UDP protocol and play a head vs head matchup.
As for SC2, I discovered the free version of SC2 (bare-bones) that can be downloaded from Blizzard. I did try it out... not quite to my taste. There's absolutely no balance to it anymore. The economy is too trivial and it's way too easy to bump up to 200/200 and move out with a giant ball of death.
In BW, the Protoss would have an uphill battle to reach critical mass with their heavy expenses for building a top-tier army and many of their units takes a lot more time to spawn than Terrans or Zergs. Zergs used to have the strongest map coverage and map control but isn't that strong in straight-up battle. Terrans are barely mobile, but tend to boast long-range and when dug into a defensive position, Terrans can be incredibly tough to dig out. Each one of them feels SO different to play with, and is almost perfectly balanced within reason much as humanly possible.
All of that was thrown out the window for SC2 and with each installment, Blizzard seems to not have bothered listening.
In SC2, all 3 races can easily uncover the entire map (Zerg loses that old advantage) and almost all units are equally mobile (Zerg loses its biggest old advantage). All 3 races now has "economic boosters" which either provide resources faster or decreases unit spawn times (Protoss loses its biggest old disadvantage). Protoss loses some of its old tankiness in the unit lineup, but gets radically new units that has STRONG crowd-control, battlefield-manipulation abilities.
Now it's like if you pick Zerg it's "GG, I go home now, bai", if you pick Protoss, it's like "I be pwnz y'all noaw! Phearz my name!" and if you pick Terran, you would be lucky to face an inept Protoss or someone who is else than Protoss or it's "GG, orly? "
Eh... oh well... I still keep SC2 on my laptop even though I don't play it much. I don't mind a friendly spar online if anyone wishes (I doubt I would put up a good fight to an experienced SC2 player).
In my heart, I still look to StarCraft as the icon of what a RTS is to me. How about you guys?
