So given the fact that few people heard of Moshe Dayan, I figured I should do a pres on him. Let's Begin (10 points if you get that pun):
Dayan was born on may 20th, 1915, in Kibbutz Degania Alef (the first Kibbutz), in what was then the Ottoman Syria province, and is now Northern Israel. Soon, he moved to Nahalal (the first Moshav)
Now the important part of Dayan's career is the military.
He joined the Haganah (Jewish self-defense forces) in 1929. One of his personal heroes at this time was Orde Wingate (yes, the very same Wingate from WC3).
In 1939, he was arrested for illegal possession of guns, and spent 2 years in Acre Prison in Acre (Akko).
In 1941, Dayan served with an Australian unit as an interpreter. His unit raided targets in Vichy French Syria and Lebanon.
In June 1941, during the invasion of Syria and Lebanon, his binoculars were shattered, and shards damaged his left eye. The damage also prevented use of a glass eye, so he had to wear an eye patch. To this day, Israelis associate the Eye Patch with Dayan.
By 1947, Dayan was on the Staff of the Haganah, and waa responsible for recruitment of agents to spy on Arab paramilitary organizations
(To be continued)
Was Dayan a member of the IRGUN as well or just the Haganah?
