I recently got the game because I was curious. I have not yet upgraded any of my units in the fear I would do it wrong. Is there a general pathway to upgrade in?

I dont agree playing gog2 is fun for several hours..
As i described in my tutorial (did you read it?.. Is sticky thread in here), I would say use all your gold on upgrading your important units. Use green chips to upgrade the important units and medal for angel. Check my tutorial for links to mansteins guids which unit u should buy

If u don't upgrade your units early on you won't be able to complete the game. I recommend upgrading all units defences and air defences. As you grow so does the a.i use green chips wisely as there not easy to get. Good luck
