I think there is no one good lenght. But it shouldnt be an overly long war were the winners were already decided in the beginning. It shouldnt feel as a routine but as a fresh insight.
I, myself have 1829-1853 now for my tw Meaning 25 phases. Seems good enough for me

Example: It can be like a TW starts with 17 phases set, and a couple of ways to win points or something, a way to keep score. An extension can be about 7 phases.
Something like that? I'm not sure if TWs were played that long as 25 phases.
How many phases did we averaged out in each of the TWs for 2016 so far?

Mine started 1957 ended 1981 Haziks two was long and successful, as was tw10...

Redirect to here from over there in TW12: What if in the future, a TW has a short term goal and when it is met with satisfaction, the players may vote to end the war at that point (to make things end properly, you know?) Or... the players really wants to continue, then the GM and the players decides on what a new short term goal is set at (the GM has ultimately the veto power, of course) and the TW continues to the second short-term goalpost and a new vote comes up at that point. I think it helps people having a satisfying end but doesn't have to be a very huge and long, dragged out TW to satisfy everyone. Plus at those times of voting, if a player needs to step out or a new player wants to join, it would be a perfect time to make a swap or something. Tagging Ivan Kolev, Napoleon Bonaparte, Von Bismarck jr, and António Salazar Napoleon Bonaparte did something similar in TW10, where we had to take one city instead of fighting a war of annihilation Well, that was more of like a long-term goal because it was set fairly far from the front lines rather than a short-term goal. Maybe a TW could have a long-term goal (that may or may not be reached) and a series of smaller short-term goals that players could decide to progress further. I'm using a RPG as a simpler example now: Quest of Stupid Kingdom IV: The Baroness' Revenge SomethingMain goal: kill the evil baroness, game over. First short-term goal: discover the sword of solar power in a dungeon - win if kill the boss. Second short-term goal: get more people on your side and eliminate some people on the enemy's side - win if burn down the evil baroness allies or win if gain support of a NPC idiot. Third short-term goal: get crowned as king of Portugal to be able to face the Evil Baroness in battle as an equal - win if you hack and slash through Lisbon. Fourth series of short-term goals: wield the sheer power of the best banana-topped sundae - win if you manage to bribe the union of sundae-makers in secret without upsetting the population. Finally, if the adventurer did really want to play through all of those stuff, he gets to try to slay the Evil Baroness and save the world.
Pardon the sarcastic tongue-in-cheek RPG humor Anyway, the players could decide that it's fine to stop playing at the first short-term goal or continue to the next. Something like that was brewing in my head.

I've been stuck outside of the last two ones.
