Louis the Sixteenth (XVI)
France declared that they were done with monarchy. They declared that King Louis the XVI should be removed from power. They did this through revolution.
Why revolution?
The common people of France had grown exceedingly poor.
1. The common people were misrepresented. In the French estates, or the group of people in France that decided things, the French people weren't well-represented. There were three estates: One for the church, one for the wealthy, and one for the common people. The problem was that each group had the same representation even though the common people made up 99% of France's population. The other two estates often gained the majority by voting together.
2. There was a famine. The price of wheat had gone up drastically due to a large famine. Bread had become unaffordable. However the King, Queen (Marie Antoinette), and the wealthy feasted on cake in the Palace of Versailles. This made the common people mad that they weren't receiving the same.
3. Louis XVI wasn't conforming to the standards of Kings. At the time of Louis the XVI's rule, much was expected of kings: They had to produce an heir, win a war, and many other things. Louis XVI for a while was unable to conform to these standards. He was unable to bear offspring for awhile due to a disorder. This gave him a name of disrespect. Eventually the royal family did have its heirs, but it took long enough for the people not to trust the King.
4. King Louis supported what seemed like a helpless war. For all of you EW4 players, you know France was allied with the US for the American Revolution. Louis the XVI wanted to support a war in order to meet the standards of kingship. Unfortunately, he chose the wrong war to support. He was forced to side with America since Britain was already a major power. The common people of France looked down on the people of America because they were basically outcasts. Also because King Louis the XVI, spent money on this hopeless war, the people were taxed even more!!!
Stay tuned for the French Revolution, Maximillian Robespierre, and Napoleon Bonaparte. They are coming soon!

I am about to post the French Revolution events, however I forgot one of the biggest causes of the French Revolution:
5. The Enlightenment had just happened. The Enlightenment was a time of questioning ideas. Many ideas were being questioned like monarchy. Many discussions were going around.

Revolution!!!
Tenis Court Oath Leaders: The beginning of the revolution. The people of France demanded a new constitution. They broke into the Tenis Court(Not Tennis court) and beheaded many guards. Marie Antoinette was in the building, but she successfully escaped.
Battle of the Bastille: The Bastille was a prison and it also housed the gunpowder. The people attacked it and they won. They executed each guard. Many historical documents say the people dismantled the building brick by brick.
The Declaration of the Rights Man: A text written declaring that all men should be created equal and other rights like the Natural Rights (John Locke formed the natural rights saying there were certain rights you received from birth). Tension rose in France and the common people united around this declaration.
Invasion of Versailles: Women invaded the Palace of Versailles. They killed many guards and butlers. King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were paraded down the street and then were put under house arrest in Paris which was miles from Versailles. Versailles would never have anyone inhabit it ever again.
Fleeing toward Austria: King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette attempted to flee toward Austria. Antoinette was a part of the royal family so they were trying to create a war. The common people of France would not be able to fight a war against Austria so they would surrender. But King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were caught. The people lost all trust for the King and Queen, so they were taken out of power.
The Reign of Terror: Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were executed by Guillotine. Marat who was the face of the revolution thought execution was the best way for the revolution. Thousands were executed by guillotine. Martial law was enforced. A Purge like Stalin's began, anyone who was thought to be against the new revolution, was guillotined.
The Committee of Public Safety: The committee was a democracy. Maximillian Robespierre who was the leader of the revolution. However Robespierre sought more power. Eventually France was to the point where Robespierre was a dictator and the French were ordered to worship him. The French prepared a guillotine for him.
Next up: Napoleon Bonaparte

Napoleon Bonaparte
For all you EW4 players, you'll hear the story of Napoleon politically mainly and his main military strategies. I don't have as much on Napoleon as the French Revolution.
Napoleon's Rise to Power: Napoleon was an extremely successful general in the war against Austria, England, and Prussia. He gained popularity in France, he overthrew the Directory which was France's government system between Robespierre and Napoleon's rule. He replaced the Directory with a Consulate which was similar to Ancient Rome's Triumvirate, it had 3 people with all the power. But after 2 years, he crowned himself emperor of France. He had a lot of support from the people of France especially for the Napoleonic Code (laws that treated everyone equally).
Start of War: Napoleon annexed the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, and parts of Prussia and Rome. Technique - Nationalism (Flag-waving basically, made people think there country was extremely important) helped people desire to join the French army. Nationalism also hurt France, it sparked rebellion in Spain and Austria.
Major Tactics of Napoleon: 1. Logistics - the army raided local villages during conquest. It provided food for the army. This eliminated the need for supply-chains and sped up the army's movement. 2. Superior Tactics - if Napoleon's army was outnumbered, they would split into two and encircle the enemy. If they had superior numbers, they would use the same strategy and basically slaughter the enemy.
Military Loss: With nationalism, there was multiple rebellions in the provinces they had taken. Great Britain proved themselves at the Battle of Trafalgar when Nelson defeated the French. After France's defeat at Trafalgar, Britain held the seas. Napoleon invaded Russia during the Spring, but the Russians pulled back utilizing Scorched Earth (burning their own farms and villages to prevent France getting their hands on the supply). By the time France reached Moscow, it was midwinter and France lacked food and shelter. They invaded Russia with 600,000 men and retreated with 100,000 men.
Napoleon's Fall and then Rise and then Fall: Napoleon abdicated the throne and was jailed in Elba which was off the coast of Italy. Louis XVIII was put into power, but people feared the rise of monarchy. Napoleon escaped the island and rose back into power. But then Napoleon was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo by the British. After this, Napoleon was exiled to St. Helena which was an island off the coast of South Africa, he died there.
