Leeb was also a lousy buy, too. Not as bad as Franco but still. I could've just bought Itagaki or something. I think Manstein recommended Vatutin (High dmg but low survivability) &/OR Patton (Good - High dmg + good survivability). Instead of Itagaki. Your EC can also fill in as an end-game tank gen. Yeah, he did recommend them over it, but for me I choose Itagaki over Vatutin for two reasons: 1. I'm used to using Itagaki for a while now. 2. Itagaki is budget Patton, while Vatutin is budget Guderian, and since I usually get Guderian ASAP, I would rather get Itagaki until I can stock up enough badges for Patton. Either way, Itagaki and Vatutin are not all that recommended, as I would pick Govorov over them any day. And since in this current game I bought Manstein I don't need a budget Patton, as Manstein is basically German Patton. It's just a matter of choice.

Konev is a lot better than Govorov, so I weny with him right after. That depends on your opinion. Govorov has the highest output, but Konev has infantry skill and better movement. Konev is also extremely expensive for a beginner.

For that amount of badges a beginner might as well save up a little more badges and buy Guderian instead.

In my first run, I bought Wavell right off the bat and the South Korean gen later on. I also messed up all my ECs here.
In my second run, I still don't regret keeping an inf EC

I used to buy worthless generals all the time until I met this forum. I had Meyer, Nasser, Cunningham, Bock, and Konev. I had a spike in blood pressure when I saw Guderian was sold off. I need him and Rommel if I am going to do anyhting in the NATO/WTO era.

First and so far only buy in the many times I've restarted the game was Malinovski. Needless to say this was before I realised that bought generals can't be upgraded and I had planned to turn him into a budget Vasilevski with better movement but those plans were immediately dashed. Haven't bought any other generals after restarting but I'm saving up for goverov or a cheaper alternative of anyone can give any recommendations.

Badoglio is said to be 2nd best PURE arty gen in-game, but saving directly for Govorov is beest. The only benefit of choosing Badoglio is that he has explosives to help crack cities & forts.

Overspending trades was a terrible mistake. Overtime through self training good memory I cooked up some strategies for early game success. This forum made it all the easier.
