The first evidence of settlement in the Astato region was from the Greek Historian Herodotus, who mentioned "a race of savages, who live on the coast of an island in the Mediterranean, and call themselves Astot". A failed Greek colony was founded c. 700 BC, but repeated native attacks forced them to retreat.
The next time Astato was referenced, it was 1600 years later, with a 9th century Arabian tax book mentioning "the isle of Al-U'statin, fertile and rich", and as part of the Umayyad Caliphate. Soon after, however, a general named Hassan stormed the province capital, U'statin (Modern Port Astato), forced the governors to leave, and declared himself ruler of an independent emirate.
The Al-U'statin Emirate, apart from a brief period of Anschluss by the Normans, enjoyed a stable and prosperous era under the rule of Hassan and his descendants, the Hassanids. Replacing the Southern Bay area as the chief port of the isle, its merchants spread across the Mediterranean, trading Saltinite and precious Easio lumber for Grain and Gold.
In the 14th century, the emirate descended into civil war, with an Admiral, Aryik, declared another emirate centred around Mount Aryik (Present-day Monte Avica), named for himself.
The Venetians took over the South of the emirate during this war, and built Forte Veneto. However, they, and both Emirates along with it, were all destroyed in the Unification War of 1453. The new rulers quickly tried to suppress all traces of Arab rule, renaming cities, massacring civilians (whether they were Christian, Muslim or Jewish), and making the new seat of power in Navaso. However, many, unsatisfied by the so-called "freedom" the new rulers brought them, formed Bandit Gangs, Pirate crews and Guerilla groups, and the region was considered one of the most dangerous during the 15 to 18 centuries.
In 1846, a group of insurgents launched a coup d'etat, and the nation devolved into civil.war between the North and West against the Southern Bay Cities. This was quickly crushed, however, and despite Marshal Hassan's (a descendant of Hassanids) best efforts, the North lost and he escaped abroad to the Ottoman Empire.
Nowadays, Astato is regaining it's position as a major port city, and is one of the most prosperous regions in the entire nation.
