Excellent advice, everyone, and thanks for your responses. By flicking at random through various threads I've picked up a whole lot of info about this game that was a mystery to me before, but I have a bunch of other questions to ask. However, I will probably start another thread for these so that other newbies like me can find the answers easily, and I will also wait a while to see if I can answer them via playing the game. Certainly it pays as a newcomer to play as a nation which has at least one trading city. Make sure to always trade with high trade stars!

Make sure to always trade with high trade stars! Hee hee... Current conquest game I am playing as Russia, I got Alexander I - five star trade general! He has gone to my trade city, and barring major disasters that require his evacuation, he will be staying there for the duration of the war.

Aaaaaand.... did it! 90 turns in 1798 Europe as Russia.
It helps to have the right allies in the right places at the right time. Also I sort of stole some people's cities and annoyed them a bit (pushed Sweden from friend to neutral, came close to doing the same with England and one of the German states).

ALMOST made it for the second time (1806 Russia). Just five more turns and I would have done it, but unlike the last game there were too many enemies in all the wrong places, and my allies kept getting in the way. Oh well, I got 100 medals out of it, so it wasn't a complete waste.
Now playing as Russia 1809, and had to take Alexander I into south-eastern Finland at the start of the game. As a chess player, it's psychologically against the grain to risk your king (even though the rules are different here), but unlike the chess king, he packs quite a punch! The map is a solid sea of blue (and I am red!!), and I suspect the best thing to do here is to turn this into a grinding game.

Woo-hoo! 69 turns as HRE 1798 and I picked up Sophia. Now I just have to grind, grind, grind and get her into some sort of fighting shape.
