Mandarin as main, studying English since kindergarten, French since high school. Still trying to get rid of Chinese accent(my father says it would be a shame for me if I still don't have a perfect American accent after years of studying in US). Mandarin+English is a great combo to have for anything from EFC to the Business World

I have lived in the USA my whole life, so i don't have the experience of being fully emerged into an unfamiliar culture. Did you have prior knowledge of the English language before moving here? Or did you just adapt? I mean i don't really know how much knowledge one person can have of another language being in the 5th grade, which is still young. Practically no knowledge. 30 words, maybe. The Israeli system for teaching English is awful at the High School level, so what would you expect at the Elementary school level? By virtue of Hebrew, I also speak about 1% of Arabic and 30% of Yiddish

Bismarck Jr, Napoleon Bonaparte I can speak English, but it's with a heavy accent. I prefer to not use it. Besides, the hearing people speaks the oral languages so badly without awareness of how difficult it is to properly lip-read them. So... the simple obvious solution for me is to stick to a written form of communication between me and those people. Unless he know ASL, then I would speak to him in that language verbally. Is it harder to lip-read people with foreign accents? Just curious In general yes. But it's more so than just that. Even as I grew up in the Midwest, it's really hard to lip-read anyone who doesn't speak in the Midwestern accent because the whole process of lip-reading is so terribly inaccurate. And even if you weren't from California, Northeast, Texas, or the South, even if you were also from Ohio, a proficient lip-reader would still need to know exactly what you plan to say with clear and precise topic choice in the conversation. In other words, with such an unreliable process, would you want to depend on it as your sole avenue of communication? That's why I prefer a pen and paper.

Mandarin+English is a great combo to have for anything from EFC to the Business World Yep, china is the most powerfull economic power in the world and home to the biggest economy in the world. Which makes mandarin great for business purposes. English is the most influental language in the world. Who doesnt speak english? There is a reason why we speak english (or engrish) on the forum. The us is the second (or third if you count the eu) biggest economy in the world. The uk is number 5. Canada 11, australia 12 and so on. Take in account that in all countries in the EU, 2th in total, people can speak english fluently.

Biggest GDP's go to English, Mandarin, Japanese, German, and Spanish. Nearest Slavic language is Russia, at half the GDP associated with Spanish. Slavic tongues are a family, so knowing one doesn't mean knowing all at a usable level anyway.
