I've seen from my experience in the forum and RL friends playing EW4 that most beginners don't know what objectives are, so here is a comprehensive guide on objectives.
What are objectives?
An objective is an action you must do to finish a mission, specifically in campaigns. These are marked by red flashy circles under the objective. They are normally divided into two, which are:
Occupy a Hex
You have to occupy a hex (city, factory, port, stable). There are red flashy circles under these. Note that these hexes often has a facility, like a city or a facotry
An example of this objective is in Fire of Revolution (Coalition). You must take Paris to win.
Note that you also have a red flashy circle under Oldenburg. This also means you have to occupy that hex, but instead of attack, you must defend. Take notice of that, as in some campaigns overlooking these would make you lose turns.
Kill/Protect a Unit
You have to kill a certain unit, usually with a general on it, to win. There are also times when you have to protect a unit, usually Napoleon in Imperial Eagle is like this. Of course, there will be red flashy circles under these units. An example of killing units occurs in Siege of Mantua, where you have to kill Heinrich XV, Wurmser (on the large fort in Mantua), and Klenau. Protecting units occur like in Retreat of Empire, where you have to protect Napoleon.
Note that you also need to kill units without generals sometimes. This happens in Naval Missions most of the time.
A Mix
Remember that these two are not mutually exclusive, so you sometimes have missions with both as an objective, like Assault on French, where you have to kill Bernadotte and Lannes. You also have to take Munich, Karlsruhe, the armory near it, Strasbourg, Metz, and Nancy.
FAQ
What are those yellow flashy circles?
Those are bonus objectives, which will get you bonus missions.
What if a city with a general has a red flashy circle? Which is the objective?
You can't know, so it's better to prepare a unit to occupy the hex if such thing happens.
Just say it if you have anything else to ask.
