Ottos: Easiest nation. +18 income and lots of gold. Important parts to look for: - Carpathia: It's the main battleground for you and HRE/Crimea/Poland/Cossacks
- Italy: Mainly for the free villages at Tarento/Naples/Veneto and Flanking; a good Otto player needs to send a scout to secure Italy before the Austrians backdoor it.
- Caucasus Flank: Russia and Crimea can be flanked here.
- Balkan Backdoor: Ragusa/Nicopolis-Sofia-Istanbul is a deadly combo commonly used by Austria.
- Istanbul's 2 keeps: you can get 4 units per turn by moving your leader from one keep to another.
- Black Sea: Crimea can be leaderkilled by 1-2 ships. If you are playing wih Otto faction, then build Demos as well; 2 of them can take down a segban.
- Rivers: Navies are great there. Use Danube to kill Austria and Dnieper/Dneister to kill everything else and attack Baltic.
- Belgrade Junction/Kosice-Khotyn Gap: Chokepoints. Take them ASAP to get out of Carpathia.

Russia: easiest to defend and hard to get out of; Winter is deadly. Important parts to look out for: - Belgorod Gap: Cossack/Crimea/You battleground.
- Baltic Village Cluster: Poland and Sweden want it. You want it as well. You are Russia. Take it.
- Winter areas: if you play Russian Faction as well, kill non-Russians when they're on snow (you have better defence). Not playing as Russians? They're weak as well. Kill them.
- Caucasus: Backdoor to Ottos/Backdoor to Москва. Send some scouts that way.
- Siberia: Sure, you don't want to waste a scout, but no one's going that way anyway. Why not take it?
- Smolensk: A chokepoint. Gain control ASAP to go to partition Poland.
- Kiev: Chokepoint, but Cossacks will move 1st turn. Either kill Crimea or kill them
- The Dnieper: Your closest usable river, until the Volga is fully on the map and a canal is built in Tsarityn. UNtil then, keep a close eye on that river.

Austria: Defensable area; easily attacked, hard to kill. Important parts: - HRE corridor: main route of Northern Expansion/Backdoor into Austria whilst Ottos are killing them.
- Italy and Dalmatia: Backdoor Ottos.
- Carpathian Mtns:
- Northern or Western: Natural defence against Poland
- Southern/Eastern: Your goal is to drive Ottos there.
- Carpathia: Main battleground against Ottos/Poles/Cossacks/Odd Crimean. Try and keep Poles off the Carpathian Mtns, and the Others behind the Tisza river.
- Belgrade Junction (the multiple crossings in hexs 13, 35 to 16, 39): Major chokepoint. Stop enemies, especially Ottos, here.
- Kosice-Khotyn Gap: Kosice is the only other way to cross Tisza; Khotyn is the Cossack/Crimea/Polish entrance. Both need to be secured, especially Kosice.
- Alps and Croatian Balkans: Your final defence. If Ottos backdoor through Bosnia and Croatia/others enter the Alps, you're basically dead.
- The Habsburg Ring: Munich-Pressburg-Buda-Zagreb-Veneto. All chokepoints; place a unit each when you're being ganged up on.

Poland: harder to defend, but great aggressive nation (in the centre of map). Important stuff: - Polish Plain: Lots of rivers for defence, lots of Villages. It's yours; defend it.
- German Corridor: Sweden can just as easily kill you when taking it to visit Austria.
- Lithuania-Novgorod Village Cluster: 10/88 villages here. Take'em before Russia and Sweden do.
- Pinsk Marshes: Grest defence, and keep a ship there in case Cossacks/Crimea/someone with swamp ambush boats come here.
- Baltic: Unless if you like to be fighting wars for Sweden, defend your coasts, since you can't attack their OP ships without losing a lot and letting them level up.
- Carpathia: Austria and the Ottos don't want you there. You want to be there. Take it.
- Zbarazh, Wismar, Riga and Minsk: a first set of chokepoints; defend there.
- Smolensk, Copenhagen, Narva and Kiev: 2nd set of Chokepoints. Attack.

My other Wesnoth guides: european-war-4.boards.net/thread/4328/bfw-beat-tutorialeuropean-war-4.boards.net/thread/4159/wesnoth-eeaw-playing-different-nationsThread for BfW: european-war-4.boards.net/thread/3413/battle-wesnothSweden: poor, cold, inhospitable. Luckily you are ignorable by other nations. Important parts: - Denmark/Narva: Chokepoints.
- HRE corridor: backdoor Austrians while they're killing Ottos.
- Baltic: You have ships. You are right next to a sea which is right next to Poland. Use them to kill Poland, especially AI Poland as they love to go to Gdansk.
- Lith-Novgorod Village Cluster: a good way to annoy enemies and earn gold is to take this fertile land.
- Syberia: Russia only bothers to send a scout through there. You send two to Leaderkill.
- Trondheim: send a unit there just to annoy enemies who are eradicating your leader/take that village, as no one will ever go there.
- Riga/Magdeburg/Prague/Smolensk/Stettin: the enemy will defend there; kill them with your units.
- Rivers: after you own Baltic, send ships to kill everyone else.
