So in GoG2 you could upgrade Units with Coins, is it same in EW5, or are the coins for Stuff and Gens?

Coins are for generals but more inportantly for items, building cities and upgrading to new age

I brought some crowns since I did not have a item in the bottom left slot for some of my generals. i wanna build cities to get princess but I don't want too many at a time. |

Still having an abundance of gold. Don't have a lot of treasure to build more cities and no need to buy items.
Will buy useless generals. They will count towards achievement of having generals so they are not entirely useless.
