As most of us here know , generals can upgrade(gain a star)to the age that your Empire is currently in, although , they need to meet the level criteria to do so, and once they do(and you decide to upgrade them ) they'll gain a slight boost in their base stats(HP, ATK, DEFF tbc; ) but not only that , they also change the unit that they're accompanying >
Example: Robin Hood, upon upgrading he'll start accompanying Longbow archers instead of basic archers.
All this brings up a somewhat crucial question , Is it actually beneficial to always upgrade your Generals?
In my 'oh so expert' opinion it is most definitely not, and it's mostly because at some point your general is going to accompany a unique unit with a set of special traits>
Example: our friend Robin gains a pretty nice trait , which is 'Longbow' , it extends his range to +1 which is in total 2, but upon upgrading again he stops accompanying Longbow archers and thus loses that trait !
In a conclusion , it only stands whether the trait is more important than the 'slight' stat boost? What's your opinion?

Good skill is more important late game because the difference of stats isn't really big if you have a set of gold items.

Items are just an add-on, if your base stats are good they'll be more efficient..

If you are not going to use a general much than no. If you are going to use the general than yes upgrade him.
By not upgrading your general you are stopping them from getting stronger and eventually they won't be able to perform well.
Right now it's not so bad not upgrading Robin Hood to 3 star since only empire age is out at the moment but when the later campaigns come he won't be doing so well.
