Generals:
What is a general?
A general is someone you can put on a unit to improve their attack or defense. The general will have different stars that improve specific unit's attacks. For example, Diez has zero stars in everything except cavalry and movement, that means that he only improves the cavalry's attack.
Skills?
Each general has skills that influence a unit's performance in a different way. Remember to look at a general's skills before you purchase them. One general requirement for starting-generals skills, is that they have a trainer ability, preferably one with an attack or movement ability.
Actually purchasing the generals?
You need medals to purchase generals, of course princesses don't require medals, but we'll talk about them later. Medals can be achieved by completing campaign missions and conquests. There are multiple tiers that have generals you can purchase from. First, the cheapest tier, this tier usually has generals that aren't worth the purchase or generals that are cheap. Try to look for cheap training generals if you're starting out. Second, this tier is more expensive and it has some better generals. A lot of the second-tiers aren't worth a purchase. Third, the costly tier, if you have extra money lying on your desk, and you want to spend it on something non-essential for your lifestyle, then this is the tier for you. It has the elite generals.
I personally recommend reading the general recommendation thread before a purchase: european-war-4.boards.net/post/4598/thread
What if I don't like the choices it's giving me?
You can use a refresh 🔃 to change out the options. Unfortunately there is a limited number of refreshes. You get more refreshes by killing units. The best mission to farm refreshes with, is the battle of Trafalgar. There are plenty of units to kill and no terrain obstructions.
My general has like no health!
You can increase rank and nobility. Rank improves overall health, and nobility improves regeneration ability. You can improve rank by killing units while using that general. You can improve nobility by capturing farms, cities, and factories. There are many ways to quickly gain rank and nobility.

What is the point of training abilities? I have a general I don't like anymore.
You can regroup generals into other generals, which can be beneficial. Upon regrouping a general into another, many things happen. To regroup, you click the general you want to improve and you press regroup, then you select the general you don't want anymore. Un-equip items before you regroup. Upon regrouping, the "improved general" will receive a health benefit, differing depending on the health of the regrouped general. The general can also receive extra stars if the regrouped general was a trainer. Once you regroup, the general you regrouped will disappear. If you regroup a princess, it can never be undone.
