Here, I will look at various scenarios to find the best possible team.
1. 4 slots, 0 emblems
Need:
1-2 Cav
1-2 Art
1 Inf
1 Nav
1. Lan: best cavalry of them all. No-brainer.
2. Isabela: best non-IAP artillery. No-brainer
Now at 3 and 4 we can debate.
Option A:
3. Sophia
4. Golitsyn
Pros: strong on Art and Cav. Tough on Forts and Cities. Last slotter has 5 stars
Cons: Poor coverage of Inf and Navy (either Sophia or Lan). Training Sophia reasonably in inf is costly
Option B:
3. Sophia
4. Victoria
Pros: Strong on Art, Navy, and Inf. Tough on Forts and Cities. No need to throw away thousands on turning Sophia/Lan into navy or Inf
Cons: Lacking in Cavalry (even if you train Sophia in Cav). Last slotter lacks in stars. Lan is the intermediate-phase infantry
Option C:
3. Victoria
4. Golitsyn
Pros: Strong on Cav, Navy, and Inf. Lots of people-massacring. Last slot has 5 stars.
Cons: lacking in fort and city cracking. Lack in artillery
Option D:
3. Yermolov
4. Golitsyn
Pros: 2 each for Cav and Art, while still having an Inf option. Human-killers.
Cons: No fort killers, lacking in Navy.
Option E:
3. Berthier
4. Victoria
Pros: very good Cavalry. 1 1/2 Artillery. Good Inf and Nav
Cons: No fort/city coverage. Artillery coverage has seen better days.
I personally favor A or B, although D is unorthodox and interesting. C and E are viable if you are cavalry-oriented.
5 Slots, 0 emblems
Need:
2 Art
2 Cav
1 Inf
1 Nav
1. Lan: Best Cavalry
2. Isabela: Best non-IAP Artillery
3. Victoria: Best non-IAP (arguably best overall) Infantry and good Navy
4. Sophia: Great Artillery, Fort+City Cracker
5. Golitsyn: #2 non-IAP Cavalry, comes with high stars
6 slots
Need:
2-3 Cav
2-3 Art
1 Inf
1 Navy
1 Econ (optional)
No-emblem lineup:
1. Lan
2. Isabela
3. Victoria
4. Sophia
6. Golitsyn
5 is a divergence. It can be Berthier (Cav, some art), Scharnhorst (Art), or Kosciusko (Inf/Econ)
6-emblem lineup
1. Lan
2. Isabela
3. Victoria
4. Sophia
5. Poniatowski: Poniatowski fills both the optional 3rd cavalry and optional 3rd artillery roles, while being able to cover either of Victoria's roles when she's engaged in the other
6. Golitsyn
8-emblem lineup
1. Lan
2. Isabela
3. Victoria
4. Sophia
5. Davout: See Poniatowksi, only Davout is better than him at Art and Cav
6. Golitsyn
12-emblem lineup
1. Lan
2. Isabela
3. Victoria
4. Scharnhorst: Sophia's fort capability is no longer needed, since Murat is in
5. Poniatowski: see above
6. Murat: He's a better fort-cracker than Sophia. 'nuff said.
Note: If you are really partial towards artillery, you may want to use Moreau or Nelson in the place of Davout/Poniatowski. If you heavily favor cavalry, you should consider Dombrowski instead of Davout/Poniatowski. If you really want an Econ General, you can use Dearborn instead of Davout.
