Is it even worth it to upgrading you paratroopers to level four (Commandos)? Just asking.

I have them up to commandos and it isn't worth it. Motorized is better def.

Is it even worth it to upgrading you paratroopers to level four (Commandos)? Just asking. Consensus is it's not worth it although the jury might still be out there. Advantages:1/paradrop 9 hexes instead of 8,I believes that allows you to be able to reach certain cities/islands that cannot be reached with the normal PMI. 2/Very tough fighting force, the special forces are absolute mayhem on both defense and offense specially against other infantry when dropped in groups. 3/You save lots of ressources with spec forces they are very cheap to build as paratroopers rather than building them the normal way. That is not the case with motorized paratroopers you pay much more ressources if you make motorized via airborne method. Major disadvantage: you loose an enormous amount of speed,so that's not a good choice for most players. We should make a comprehensive list of all the cities that can only be reached with special forces paratroopers (9 hexes) and not by PMI's and based on that info we might be able to answer for sure if the upgrade can be worth it.

After lots of conquests (under 65 turns!) I have the last upgrade for air force. So I can maybe make a list of it.

If open option menu and check mark hexes then able to see grid and count hexes without having technology.
Can count distance between cities but also usefull seing if can drop on island land hex (not city itself) that could not be reached before.

I have been thinking about "what if I can jump 9 hex" for so long. So here is a list of interesting destinations you can jump to with 9 hex range paratrooper (based on 1960).
Dublin -> Canada Lisboa -> Caribbean Tokyo -> Midway Island Yokohama -> Midway Island Midway Island -> Hawaii Khabarovsk -> Hokkaido
With this, you can conquer Pacific in 1960 really fast. But I choose to stay with PMI because of mobility and extra damage on city.

I think the "extra damage against fortress" also counts for cities. When I'm playing with Govorov on field artillery I easily get 60-80 damage to a city which is devastating. He has 5 art. stars, Plain warfare lvl 3, and explosives lvl 2, if you get lucky or his health is below 50% you'll easily get more than 100 damage. PMI has the grenades which do extra damage to fortresses so I'm guessing that makes the extra damage against cities.

Yeah I think it was EasterEmpire that first posted that cities had the fortress attribute attached to them so the demolition skill also applied extra damage to them making that skill extra valuable.Good info.

It looks like the 9 hex upgrade (or downgrade as many of us see it) would speed up the mop up portion of the conquest then but not necessarily the first phase. Mop up=when you know you already won and just finishing things up.
