In the campaign menu you see you can upgrade things. But what actually does the upgrading do? I have almost everything on level 1, 5 things level 2 and just upgraded guards to level 3. Is that good or not?

Not good. The upgrading means the unit starts with more chevrons when you buy it. Since gaining a chevron regenerates health, I find it wasteful.
However, unlocking certain units is useful

You should rather change them into medals. You can get four medals per campaign star in battle of Austerlitz in the Coalition Campaign ussing Tsar Alexander in the Vienna shop. |

How do I change them into medals? sell them at Austerlitz with Alexander. Selling them at the HQ is a waste as the price doesn't change with a general's trade rank. It was a mistake I feel into during my first few games |
