Current state of play:
Carteaux - 3* artillery, rank 86, nobility 7
Sophia - 3* artillery, 2* cavalry, 1* naval, 3* movement, rank 86, nobility 8
Dumouriez - 4* cavalry (trainer), rank 74, nobility 7
Fatimah - 1* infantry, artillery, naval; 2* cavalry, 4* fortress, (economic and war master, architecture). Rank 28, nobility 7 (thank you, Chain the Beast grind!)
Academy generals on current refresh include Diez (3* cav, movement trainer, 540 cost), Elphinstone (2* naval, 1* artillery, Navy trainer), and a whole lot of useless mouths (Ricardos, Galvez, Amadeo III, Buxhoeveden) that I'm not even going to think about.
I have war horse and snare drum, and artillery items 2+ attack and 4+ defence
Fatimah is proving useful to me especially in terms of helping early economic development (cheap early upgrades plus income boost).
Sophia's usefulness goes without saying, especially in North America, where fortresses are commonplace.
This means that if I am going to continue to play free, one of the other two generals has to go. Either Carteaux or Dumouriez boosts Sophia to rank 98 and nobility 10.
Carteaux is not a trainer, so he just disappears, but at least Sophia can keep the artillery capability going.
If Dumouriez goes to make room for Diez, I lose a four-star cavalry general with no guarantee as to how soon he would appear again. However, Sophia finalises her nobility boost and gets a significant rank boost plus her third cavalry star and a fourth movement star as soon as I regroup Diez (which I would do immediately).
Elphinstone has nothing to offer except a naval star for either of the princesses; he would be regrouped immediately. However, I have to ask if they really need it. I gather that the better option is simply to play as US or Britain in America 1775 and try for Kate.
AND SO:
Is it worth boosting Sophia's cavalry abilities, or should I just dedicate her to artillery? If she stays as a dedicated artillerist, there's no point sacrificing Dumouriez to boost her.
Is it worth boosting Sophia's movement capabilities (either refreshing until I get Diez again or finding another movement trainer), or should I just buy a + artillery movement item? Which is more powerful, Sophia's movement stars or the items? My understanding of War Horse is that it doesn't give any extra movement; it just lets the equipped general use their full movement in mountain terrain. If the + artillery movement items do as good a job as the stars, there is no point in sacrificing Dumouriez or Carteaux (especially since items can be shifted and movement stars cannot), and I might as well continue with the lineup that I have.
