Chuck Yeager - The first man faster than sound (sorry, Barry Allen). He flew X-1 and broke the sound barrier at 45,000 feet as a test pilot.
If anyone is wondering about his credentials about being a general, he did make it becoming a brigadier general in the USAF.

James Dolittle, led the famous "Dolittle Raid" on Tokyo about 6 months after Dec 7,1941 - the day of infamy: Attack on Pearl Harbor. In the first book of Harry turtledove's series Days of infamy, Hawaii is captured by the Japanese instead of simply raiding pearl harbor. Dolittle, in the same spirit as the real-life Raid, attacks Hawaii instead of Japan, which is now untouchable. Funny, because it appears in a newspaper, and it hits you what it means Robert L. Eichelberger. Fought in the American Intervention in the Russian Civil war. When Superintendent at West point, he cut horseback riding in favour of modern weapons training. Commanded the US eighth army in the South-west pacific during WW2. Letter is R.

One of the greatest Roman Defeats, it is the subject of Harry turtledove's "give me back my legions" which was the Emperors response to the event. Sebastiani, French Diplomat and Soldier.
