My understanding at present is this:
1) On land, three movement stars of a general = one extra hex and +1 movement from an item is the same as adding a movement star. So a general or princess who had been trained to (or comes with) five movement stars, plus a pair of +2 movement items, would have the equivalent of NINE movement stars or three extra hexes (above the movement capability of their unit) on flat ground (For most of them, not having the Geography skill cuts this down on rough ground because they also have to carry War Horse).
2) On the water, three movement stars of a general = one extra hex, but +1 movement from an item (the propeller) here adds AN EXTRA HEX.
I realise things are subject to a bit of rounding: e.g. armoured car has 8 movement, which is 6 + 2, rounded down to two hexes. Add (say) Lan, that's now 13 equivalent movement stars or (3 x 4) + 1, 4 hexes. Give her a +2 saddle, that's now 3 x 5, 5 hexes, and there are no +3 land movement items, she can never have more than that. But she doesn't have geography, so she has to carry war horse anyway.
And with the exception of Isabela (4 movement stars), Geography and a large number of movement stars (untrained) generally don't go together anyway, and Isabela is artillery-biased and a VERY weak cavalry general requiring multiple applications of Agha or Dumouriez to bring her up to speed... and even then the rest of her skills don't match a cavalry general. On the other hand, boost her up to five stars and... heavy or siege artillery 5 points, five movement stars brings that up to 10 points, two horse artillery items brings it up to 14 points, that's four hexes b/c no need to carry War Horse.
Have I got all this right?

More or less yes. 1) Maximum movement = the "mov" value of a unit + bonus from general (max 5) + bonus from item (max two items, each max +2) 2) Movement cost: each hex subtracts from maximum move value of a unit certain number of points. 3) War Horse item / Geography skill turns all terrains into "plain land" 4) infantry units have build-in War Horse/Geography skill, so their movement cost for any land hex is always 3 5) naval movement is not affected by general movement stars, and movement cost is 1 for each hex. Maximum movement on sea is 6 (basic ship movement 3, navigation skill +1, and two Propellers +1) Terrain Type
| Movement Cost
| Def. bonus vs infantry
| Def. bonus vs cavalry
| Def. bonus vs artillery
| plain land
| 3 | 0%
| 0%
| 0%
| plant | 4 | 0%
| 10%
| 5%
| forest | 5 | 0%
| 20%
| 10%
| desert | 4 | 5%
| 5%
| 5%
| hill | 5 | 0%
| 5%
| 10%
| mountain
| 6
| 0%
| 10%
| 20%
|
Example: heavy cavalry (mov 9) + Lasalle (mov 5) + quality saddle x2 (2* mov +2) = 9+5+2+2 = 18 Lasalle can move through three mountains or six plain lands hexes If we equip him one saddle and war horse, his movement will be 16, but on any type of terrain, so 5 hexes regardless of type.

Thanks for clarifying, dain That movement guide and defence bonus table are really great; thanks. I'm trying to write a definitive article telling all for newbies and I might just steal all that (with links included; fortunately they copy over when you copy/paste into word, so giving credit where credit is due is easy). It certainly brings home the advantage of the accurate, strike and bugle skills for fighting out in the open, why Sakurako has her fans, and why Isabela is a better all-round artillerist than Sophia (I agree Sophia has her special talent in fort and city cracking). *looks at table of generals' stats I got from somewhere on this board that I can't remember* If you REALLY want a fast-moving cavalryman and are prepared to pay for it, you could always get Poniatowski - then maximise his cav skill and train him up in movement x 2. He has Geography so he doesn't need war horse; he has assault art, so he can always hit to the max in S/L; add a pair of +6 cavalry pistols to swap in when the move phase is over and things could get REALLY interesting. Has anyone done this? (It is worth noting that Kollowrat has two artillery stars - as many as Sophia has at the start - and Geography and is also dirt-cheap, so if you wanted a cheap artillery general who could move fast while you're trying to get her, there's an option for you. I'm currently playing on two different platforms, and I have to admit I keep my Android tablet for wasting medals trying silly stuff, so I might buy him and give him a go sometime.) As far as Lasalle is concerned, where, except possibly deep in Russia, are there six plain land hexes anywhere in a row in this game? (That being said, this may be of interest to those attempting to beat the game in 30 moves as France.)
