I'm also at Discovery Age, I only need to save up some more literature. But, from what I've heard, the upgrades to level 4 are very expensive! So my question is, who should I upgrade? I have Washington (lvl 4), Li Shimin (lvl 3), Alexander (lvl 3), Barbarossa (lvl 2), Nobunaga (lvl 3), Hannibal (lvl 3), Robin Hood (lvl 3), Joan of Arc (lvl 2), Montezuma (lvl 2), Cleopatra (lvl 2), Huo Qubing (lvl 1), and some grey generals. Please also specify the order they should be upgraded in. Thanks, I'll be saving literature!

I think it only matters you upgrade Nobunaga since he gets special skill at lvl 4. I tend upgrade my strongest generals first so I would upgrade them in this order. Nobunaga, Li shi min, Barbarossa, Alexander, hannibal, Robin hood

best75 is correct, Nobunaga gets a great skill so upgrade him. @coolguy14, I do disagree about Barbarossa, upgrade him to level 3 I guess but NOT to level 4. He is weak, particularly before level 6, so I would save your medals for better stuff. Also, I left Hannibal at level 3, so he could stay with his elephant buddies. I replaced him as my sole Cavalry with his improved version, Atillia around this time. Obviously, you don't have to follow me, but he Isn't really a end-game general anyway. 1. Upgrade Nobunaga. (mass fire skill) 2. Upgrade Li-shimin (he gets 2-3 range) 3. Upgrade Alexander. 4. Replace Robin hood with the identical but level 4 Catherine to save medals. 5. Upgrade Hannibal or find a better cavalry.

I should've specified, I also almost have Saladin as well. Hmm, I still don't have stats for him at level 6, so I guess upgrading him to 4 is ok. The only reason to keep upgrading Robin hood (who has less attack than Catherine) is because he gets longbow at level 6, but so does Nelson so who cares? So yeah, switch Hannibal for Saladin, and save medals by buying Catherine and thus no longer using Robin hood.

Slightly off topic (INSERT TRAIN CRASHING PIC HERE) but does anyone know how much literature medieval HRE gives? I'm in progress of it, so I can't see it, and I'm trying to figure out if I should wait to complete it or do it before I get Discovery Age.

And back to the question - yes, Nobunaga is the first one to advance to level 4, the last one to level 5, and again the first one to level 6 (Maybe, Li Shimin is the only competition). Mass fire+Leadership+Spy together are dreadful indeed.
