I have: Washington, Genghis, Saladin, Barbarossa, Nobunaga, and Lincoln in age 4 Li Shimin in age 3 Alexander and Montezuma in Age 2 And some irrelevant earlier gens.
I have a good amount of purple items, and 1/2 of the Paladin set (used on Washington usually)
I put Barbarossa, Washington, and Genghis in the Southern start point, where they do fairly well until meeting AI Nobunaga who massacres them I put Li, Nobunaga, Saladin, and Alexander/Linc in the Northern Start point. They get mauled when taking the far eastern objective, and end up dying by the time they reach Nobunaga's city.
What should I do differently?

You should upgrade Li to 4 stars. That'll help you a lot. The way I did this one is I put my powerful generals in the north start point and some weaker ones in the south. My northern army pushed around the middle base and attacked the eastern base then swung south and attacked the south base. My weaker generals I used to take the center base then brought around to distract Nobunaga and bring him to the west side of the south base while my stronger generals attacked the base directly from the east.

I'll upgrade Li as soon as he levels up to 30. Will try your method soon!
