When you regroup a general, the general that is on the left disappears, and some of his HP and Regen (depending on how much the general has, of course) goes to the general on the right. If the general on the left has a "trainer" ability (Ex: Kutaisov has Artillery Trainer), one star will be added to the general on the right.
For example, if I have a Sophia that I just got (2 stars artillery), I can press the info on Sophia, and then press regroup. Let's say I have Kutaisov (artillery trainer skill) as one of my generals. I press on him (he should be on the bottom), and then if I press regroup again, Sophia will gain some HP and Regen, 1 more artillery star (3 total now), but Kutaisov will disappear.

You got the position wrong. Left side is base, right side is material. genghiskhan, this is for you too, so you don't accidentally regroup Sophia to Diez.

I did that once...Then restarted for obvious reasons.
