I started playing as Greece in Classical Age Conquest, my first dedicated x<3-star conquest. Why is it that my development is so slow, even after taking Eastern Europe, Middle East, and SE Asia, I feel like I'm lacking behind. Thank god for the collapse of Roman Empire at turn 20, I managed to follow up with a reunification of the Balkans. Is playing non 3-stars this punishing?

Its just the small amount of land you start off with so you will progress to new ages slower than if you were a 3 star country.

Why did the Romans collapse? You should be attacking people not allied with you to start, though for speedruns a strong player would end the alliance as soon as possible, perhaps.
It should be much easier once you get some generals. I remember trying classical conquest as a noob, and it was indeed challenging.
Wait...aren't you in medieval? I'd think it would be easier by then, dunno.

My strategy to play with low star country is to choose strategic located country that can easily reach other small country. Small country like greece has few cities but produce quite decent gold. And this small country will give up easily rather than those big country like china. And from my experience, the more country you conquer (number of cities you own doesnt really matter), the easier other country will surrender when you attack their capital. So I usually choose country like Arab, India, or even Japan

Ya Roman is allied with Greece so did. You break the peace? It would be wise to keep peace and right the Persians and Egyptians, don't need to worry about carthage as Rome usually beats them back

Sent Nobunaga Oda, Alexander and Moctezuma Eastward through the Mid-East from the start. Sent Joan to take the Hunnish down. Repeatedly attack, capture and lose Sicily until RE Italian front broke down. England was not attacked and took Bruxells this time. Egypt is forced into Empire Age territory now. China took down the Mongolian-Hunnish territory and Northern Japan. RE is still trying to start Musoulini's African Campaign though...

Then it will be harder, Rome works as a good wall for Greece, and since it is no more you can be attacked by everyone
