Hi,
I am just now in discovery age, and I suppose I stay here for some time (600 literature, that means 600 missions is terrible price).
Unfortunately I am also in level 79, which means unplayable battles/attacks/invasions - luckily, I have all generals and almost all princessess bought (are jewerly of any use after that?).
My generals are Saladin, Alexander, Nobunaga, Li Shimin, Barbarossa, Montezuma, Bismarck, Catherine, Lincoln, and Huo Qubing - all at four stars (any a bunch of grey ones)
The point is I have not any items bought just now. Only those given as reward in campaigns. Only bought the cheapest boots for coins.
Now to the point, which items should I bought. Next 600 missions means 12000 medals in the next two months.
Are purple items in Cologne worth buying? Or should I save exclusively for sets? Personally I think it will last maybe a year to proceed, given the price 4000-4500/item...
Thanks

Thanks You can complete the game without purchasing any items. There are plenty of purple items in the campaigns/defense missions. You will also get some legendary equipment for completing the conquests. So... it's up to You whether to purchase anything or not.

Btw, there are a lot of literature in the campaign missions (bonus, green marked buildings). Alternatively You can play conquests to get literature as a reward for completing.

Thanks. I completed all campaigns in first three ages, and all literature I got there was spent for Discovery age upgrade (and for Bismarck), however the Aztec second campaign is unsolvable for me just now (it seems my generals are still weak for it).
I tried to play conquests in the past, but haven't been able to finish even the easiest Classical age one, so I have still no conquest won at all. Maybe I can try it now...

Classical Greece is very easy with 4* generals. And it gives 20 Literature.

Believe it or not, I tried Classical age China conquest with four 4* generals (Saladin, Alexander, Nobunaga, Huo Qubing) and lost them all in turn 10. (Yes, I tried auto fight on this one.)
Just to be sure, the objective in conquest is only to destroy town center? Because when AI attacked my town and managed to destroy town center, all my generals were lost...

Town center is the main OBJ, yeah. Bigger countries tend to move their's more often. The more territory you have, the quicker nations will surrender. For example, Basic classical china will most likely make Japan, India, and Angkor surrender instantly. Facing off against just basic Rome, though, they will move their capitol a lot, because they own just about the same amount of cities. Divide your generals, by the way. 4* gens can most likely run off by themselves in classical, considering the MASSIVE tech gap. If things get dicey (unlikely), put a 2 man guard with them (usually infantry).

Well, taking the town center will end the battle immediately but the AI, it is not too reliable for controlling your allies and troops. When it comes to enemy lords, kill them or else they'll respawn in their capital. Try to preserve your soldiers as much as possible, especially the powerful starting units early in conquests. Use the correct merceneries when you have spare money to do so, if not you might get a weaker one instead. Upgrade to a better age whenever possible, because better units and possible unique troop unlocks. These should help you in conquest.

Finally finished my first conquest (with Saladin, Alexander, Nobunaga, Huo Qubing) - lost Alexander and Nobunaga during the conquest - unfortunately they don't have Logistics - it's great skill.
Now I'm going to try two and one star conutry, and hopefully earn some literature for Gunpowder upgrade.
Many thanks for advices.
