This is very true, which is why there also writing classes where students can write stories or film classes and all these other creative classes. I must reiterate, I'm not against these classes, it's just that they shouldn't force a kid who can't sing to take a chorus class. Make them take one of these classes, but don't make them take all of them. The thing is if a kid can't sing, make him listen, listening is as important as singing itself You won't force the kid to listen. That kid will just forget everything he learned if he doesn't care about or like music. And what's the point of forcing a kid to listen to Frederic Chopin? To make him cultured? To make him sophisticated? If your answer is yes, then your priorities are out of wack. School is to help kids succeed, not to help them quote Shakespeare or recognize Chopin's orchestra. Now, if your answer is that it would make him more intelligent and more logical, I still disagree. First, intelligence isn't just associated with being able to conduct a symphony or being able to take a test. Intelligence is something almost unexplainable because it takes so many different forms. In fact, I'd argue people like Frederic Chopin aren't as intelligent as just about any architect, because an architect is smart enough to be trusted with building a structure which will shelter people and one which won't collapse in on itself. Second, music doesn't make you logical. Math and science do that.

I think no education system is perfect. Every system has its cons and pros.
An example of this is shown by the PISA test, a worldwide test measuring intelligence of 15 year olds across the world.
This shows that China excels at math with a 6th place, yet they're only 27th when it comes down to reading.
Ireland is completely the opposite, scoring 5th at reading but only 18th at maths.
I'm not an expert but I think you can see that China focuses more on mathematics while Ireland focuses more on reading.
So what is better? An education system that gives better mathematicians or an education system that gives better readers?
An education system needs to focus on certain subjects. One hour additional english class is great, cause the english lvl of the students will rise, but it also gives less room to other subjects, what if the additional english class replaces the german class? Than the german lvl of the students will go down.
Simply said, every subject teaches us something different. An education system can't teach us all subjects cause the time simply isn't there.
The american system perhaps doesn't have room for geography class, cause they think a different subject is more important.
Here in the netherlands you don't have music class.
So what's more important? Learn kids how to play an instrument or learn them the capitals of Africa? I don't know.
I guess both countries putted all cons and pros together and came to their solutions on which subjects are best to add and which aren't. And most likely they've done way more research to this topic as i did so i guess i'm not the one to judge which subjects should be thaught, but they are.

Well for example we in Latvia have 14 subjects in high school while in UK and USA there are only 3-5, but from education level we learn stuff here much earlier, for example things we learn in 1st-2nd year in UK learns only in 4th or 5th year and I have to note that first class here from next year will be at age of 6 while in UK it is 8. I am not saying our system is ideal we have a lot of flaws, but we learn a lot more than in UK.

My dad used to share a saying with me:
Tell me, and I'll forget. Show me, and I might not remember. But involve me, and I'll understand.
Take that as you will in your music debate.

No, he left. Again. Then came back, then left again. I was Transfermium/Kastrioti/Guisan/King George III/Devlet I Giray/Elite Winged Hussar/[Insert any one of my aliases here]. Now I'm the guy that pwned Hannibal and the Roman Washington.
