What does promoting in EW5 do? does it have a purpose?

What does promoting in EW5 do? does it have a purpose? Promoting increases health, basically. If units lvl up, they gain atk and certain/other stat boost. |

Promoting will allow your generals to have more HP, in turn they will survive easier, eye covered and generals can be promoted, but it can eventually become very expensive
