I got Lan and Victoria a week ago and i realised how useful assault and defense art is in campaigns. I like to rush in when i attack so assault art is really nice for Lan. Defense art is also great because i can put Victoria on the city objective, and take all the damage. She will only take 1 damage at a time though because of her defense art. Defense art i find is the most useful for this. It's also very useful for ships, that's why i think Victoria is the best naval general.
To trigger them, you need to use s/l. For assault art, just keep hitting until it eventually triggers. For defense art, what you need to do is end the turn, and as the enemy is attacking, they are going to attack your general with the defense art at one point. Just before they hit you, make a save so you can keep going back to it until defense art triggers.

It takes a while for Assualt Art or Defense Art to trigger, so this can be quite tedious. It's sometimes necessary though.

It helped me get 420 stars without spending money on slots or shields.

Just before they hit you, make a save so you can keep going back to it until defense art triggers. Does this work with multiple attackers, if you are quick enough on the save? It brings up a point about save-load - it isn't enough to deal the maximum damage, if in return you take a lot. I restarted (on a different platform) so I'm currently running for minor princesses like Fatimah. And since I don't have special items yet, the need to keep my generals alive for longer periods (because I don't have tents to heal them fast) is important. So I will sometimes reject a heavy hit on an enemy if a somewhat lesser hit results in much less damage done in return.
