I currently have all three in my lineup, and I am working on grinding up the medals to fully equip them. All three are fully trained in movement and cav stars (I use Poniatowski on cav first, and artillery second), and I was wondering what your thoughts on them are? Who should get what items?

you don't get items just for one general. You should be swapping them so when one of your generals attack, you give the other general the attack item. Also during the enemies attack, just do a save and load before the enemy hits your general and go to headquarters, there you can give the general that is being attacked the item.
The items you should get is snare drum, warhorse, 6+ artillery attack, and cav attack, propeller and 4+ ship attack.
If you plan on getting victoria or any inf general that has mass fire, you can give them 2 6+ inf attack.
I did this and i got 420 stars with just 4 generals, no money spent on slots or emblems.
