I wouldn't say Panzermeyer is a great gen medal-wise (many, many new players, including myself back before I found this forum, fall in the trap of getting Meyer, even though Badoglio->Guderian is better in the long run), but if you get him, he has decent output, and there's much worse commanders out there (e.g. Budyonny, Inoue) to be stuck with.

Let us not forget that in 1939 Germany can really spiral out of control if you aren't careful managing your resources. You can easily get overrun by France, Britain, Norway, Poland, and the Soviet Union, as well as North American support (Crerar + Eisenhower = ouchies). From my last humiliating defeat, I would suggest you split your troops between Paris Blitzkreig and Moscow rush. Once you take Moscow the Soviet Union is pretty much dead, while securing Paris does the same for France.

Germany is strong, but is sorrounded with enemies, and italy is no help Neither is Spain, nor any other Axis power tbh. All the smaller axis powers can do is take the Balkans, so you can at least bring more forces to the Soviet/French front.

I've always avoided Germany, but when you look at AI Germany's ferocity, it is very enticing to play carelessly as Germany. Except for CWE, Germany always failed there.

I've always avoided Germany, but when you look at AI Germany's ferocity, it is very enticing to play carelessly as Germany. Except for CWE, Germany always failed there. AI Germany in my current game ALWAYS gets destroyed. In 1939 too, when it is supposed to give an advantage to the Axis. Germany works fine killing France, Norway, Denmark, Poland, Yugoslavia, Greece, and some Soviet cities. But after that, Germany stalls while seizing Moscow and Great Britain, and that's when American and Canadian forces come in, destroy Spain, and push the Germans back, motivating the Soviets and Brits to come destroy them too. This isn't so bad if you're playing as one of the European Axis countries, or perhaps Germany itself. If you happen to be an Asian Axis country, however, and have not destroyed at least half of North America by that time, Europe will be plagued with Allied forces, soldiers, cities, and maybe even generals, therefore meaning it's gonna be a hell of a time wrecking them. Of course, this makes Africa fall to the Allies as well, meaning your forces will have to split between Africa and Europe. The only way to avoid this would be destroying Great Britain or North America (whichever one's closer, depending if you're in Europe or Japan) before too many reinforcements arrive, and even then they might weaken the Axis a little still. Playing as Germany often times means that your allies aren't even good meat shields, and therefore makes troop placement critical. It's way harder than it looks like.
