I don't have that much experience, but these are my favourites early game:
Nasser (Istanbul): Infantry
Nasser is a 3* in infantry, and is pretty powerful with the commandos due to his starting rank being Captain. The {Explosives} perk means on a commando he can take out forts with ease. However, despite his high rank at first, he tends to die a lot as infantry isn't durable. He is best to break enemy lines.

He isn't worthwile as you don't need an infantry general. If you really want a cheap infantry general, buy Zhu D. If you want a top infantry general, buy valivesky, mannerheim could be argued as well. Other infantry generals just don't seem worthwile in any occasions.

A starting Infantry general isn't worth it that much. I would always recommend Badoglio as your first general, as he is beast. Then you either save for Guderian or take another starting tank general, which could be either Vatutin or Itagaki, or even something cheaper such as List or something.

I believe Manstein does not recommend List in his All Generals Analysis thread. Plus, some other users will recommend trying to stick to Manstein's Choosing Generals paths instead. I think that 2nd bought gen should be an arty user like Govorov as arty is needed in specific campaigns.

I was just picking really cheap generals with a little output for the very beginners, as it might be a little hard to push through with only Badoglio until you can get Govorov for someone really new to the game.

Or you could take the Elite's path though sticking to that path is VERY hard.

Itagaki and List don't have enough good skills for their price. Patton is far better or Vatutin as you mentioned.

Good Artillery Slot Generals: 1. Badoglio - Until you can get Konev/Bai C.X. 2. Govorov 3. Bai C.X/Konev

Manstein is a good Artillery too, at least against the Aliens.

First of all, I love the title, comes from Dire Strait's Money for Nothing.
For early game, I would suggest List for tank, Badoglio or govorov for artillery and Ozawa for naval/air. For midgame, I'd suggest saving up for end tier generals, like Patton, Guderian, Konev and Yamamoto.
