I liked the new "donate to your allies so they can at least hold out an extra turn on that one city as your generals sweep to their rescue" (donation to allies) system. It sometimes helps prevent the enemy from capturing a distant ally when you have a surplus amount of resources as you march on your way one territory at a time to rescue them.
Though I value this rarely, for it's only if I'm dominating the region I am in and have a stable economy. But if the enemy is powerless, sometimes I donate 9999$ to an ally to see the crazy things the AI does with the money.
Another feature I liked is how your Allies actually do work, they consume funds and use the same allowed functions a player can perform, though some are rare or not even used (like paratroops).

I think ET made the AI not use paratroopers that much to counter the INSANE paraspam problem from WC3.

Haha, that is true. Before I would do the same thing, produce units that can effectively fend off the enemy's units (For ex. Armored Car vs Assualt Infantry) but I would get overrunned. Man, the waves would come to wash my lands over. (Nowadays, I have bettered my tactics and tech, so this is less likely )
