German who was selected as the Chief of the Army General Staff, replacing the previous Halder, by Hitler. Efficient and effective, he resigned from his post due to stress in 1944 after losing faith in Hitler. At the end of the war, he was captured by British troops (luckily for him) and was a POW until 1947.
