Pretty sure the Imperial Japanese flag was in popular use much later, it's not in use as often now though. I don't think so. It used to have an emblem with keys in the medieval times. Maybe China Switzerland?

I have to say both flags has the same 2 colors in 3 stripes(tones are different and proportions too), both officially comes from the same century, but different regions, one has been written in history due to crusades the other country is known with it's classical musics
