The novel in question was made into a major Hollywood movie starring Charlton Heston which went on to win 11 Oscars in 1960 including Best Picture, Best Actor & Best Director. He met Billy the Kid and offered him a pardon while he was governor of New Mexico - Scott Wilson played him in Young Guns II. Lifted from his Wiki page: X's "most controversial command came at the battle of Shiloh, where he continued as the 3rd Division commander under Maj. Gen. Grant." "At first, the battle was viewed by the North as a victory; however, on April 23, after civilians began hearing news of the high number of casualties, the Lincoln administration asked the Union army for further explanation. Grant, who was accused of poor leadership at Shiloh, and his superior, Halleck, placed the blame on X by asserting that his failure to follow orders and the delay in moving up the reserves on April 6 had nearly cost them the battle." X's "most notable service came on Saturday, July 9, 1864 at the Battle of Monocacy part of the Valley Campaigns of 1864." "On May 19, 1881, X was appointed U.S. Minister to the Ottoman Empire in Constantinople (present-day Istanbul, Turkey). X remained at the diplomatic post until 1885, and became a trusted friend of Sultan Abdul Hamid II" If no one gets him today I'll ask an easier question tomorrow. You mean Don Carlos Buell? But he wasn't a governor in New Mexico?!?

But he was blamed for Shiloh... Perhaps, but you'll have to take it up with Wiki. As I said I knew of him from the Ben-Hur & Billy the Kid connection. There is a connection with Buell though, at least according to Wiki: "On August 17, 1862, X accepted a regiment command in the Department of the Ohio to help with the successful defense of Cincinnati during Braxton Bragg's incursion into Kentucky. Next, he took command of Camp Chase, a prisoner-of-war camp at Columbus, Ohio, where he remained until October 30, 1862. A month later he was placed in charge of a five-member commission to investigate Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell's conduct in response to the Confederate invasion of Kentucky. The commission criticized Buell for his retreat, but it did not find him disloyal to the Union"

An Amercian Civil War general. He was also a governor later on. He wrote the best-selling American novel of the 19th century. His name is Major General Lew Wallace and in case anyone missed it he wrote Ben-Hur. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lew_Wallace

Wow I finally won lol.
Alright, this one's a bit hard. I'll be throwing out hints everyday if I can. If this is not solved by the end of next week, I'll make it easier (it'll be somewhat related to this though). Or if you have completely no idea, just tell me. I'll change it.
In the Chinese Civil War, one of the final operations launched by the CCP was the _______ Campaign.
The PLA in this operation wanted to take out the remaining KMT forces in Shandong and the KMT's main force in Xuzhou.
The name starts with H and ends with I.

If yes, my answer's either Hebei, Hefei or Hubei. I vauguely remember the names of certain cities similar to the above ^^.

Though after this campaign, the CCP named a road in Shanghai the "Huaihai Road" to commemorate the victory of this campaign. To be honest, it's a mystery to me why the CCP gave the offensives such names. Might have to look that up. Pretty much what happened in this campaign was a major attack against the KMT headquarters in Xuzhou. It was halted after they reached the north of Yangtze. It's spelled like this: H _ _ _ _ _ i.
