I have don't have any items so far, except for a bayonet that I bought way back, and I am wondering which items are the best to get? I know there are several guides out there, but I am specifically wondering which type of items are the best; offensive, defensive, movement?
Additionally, I am trying to get Victoria right now. Which item do you think would help me the most in getting her?

John Cameron of Fassiefern, the best items are snare drum and warhorse. _ snare drum: skill mass fire for all units _ warhorse = geography (useful only for cavalry and artillery) Tents regenerate your genrals' health during the AI turn (2, 4 or 6 per turn). Personally, I use attack items more than defense items.

Also useful:
Potent gunpowder: +6 artillery attack.
Cavalry pistol: +6 cavalry attack (regardless of whether the cav uses guns or swords).
Don't bother going for the lower-valued items.
Military camp: +6 health regeneration per turn.
Quality saddle: Adds +2 movement points (not hexes, please note) to your cavalry general.
Propeller: gives a naval general's ship an extra hex of movement.
Armoured Carrier: I find this one useful for generals/princesses that are forced to travel across water, e.g. when attacking Britain, Sardinia, Sicily, Corsica, or travelling between Italy and the Ottoman Empire. Removes the penalties which accrue when land generals fight on water, and useful for the artillery generals if they have to attack land targets (especially for Sophia attacking coastal artillery, and particularly so with a rocket launcher => one-shot kill with no retaliation). Others beg to differ, so see what works for you.

Defense items are in fact better than regen items during combat. It could effectively make your generals last longer on battlefield. Tents are proven to have no effect if inside buildings or played a turn(everything except moving).

It is in your inventory, and you can use it any turn in any conquest/campaign, with the only restriction being it must be used on one of your own generals. To access it, select the unit your general is on, click the "i" in the top right of their portrait, click the item button, and then you will find your inventory where you can add whatever items you have purchased. You can do this whenever you want, so for warhorse you can just use it whenever your general is moving, and then replace it with another item for when they are attacking.
