So the skill "ambush" gives them 50% of resistance against archer units or makes them 50% more vulnerable against them?

Neither. Ambush gives +50 % attack against archers. You can check this in "Cantar de mio Cid" (Empire age, Carolignian Empire campaign) with El Cid.

It probably means counterattack dmg +50% against the specified attacker.

This skill is a example of another weird wordings of abilities by easytech. I remember this skill giving 50% more damage against archers.
