Well getting air stars on your ECs will make Patton your last tank general choice. His Air stars give him a boost but after that you will see his lack of output and will go with Vatutin. Your ECs will demolish Cities and Fortifications easily as well so that Patton boost goes out of the window as well.
Govorov deals loads of dammage whem on Plain and even if he suffers a lot of attacks, hr has the Barrage Trait and iirc explosives as well.
The best combo is 2 Arty 1 Tank EC, as previously said, you need a commander that can suck up dammage and deal loads of dammage and move quick while Arty is slower but deals a bit higher. You will see the reason why 2A1T is better when you actually went for it

Yes, I can see that Patton does very well until his health drops, then his output is really bad.
At that point Montgomery has the same output with much better survivability and better air. Patton only better at initial attack in a city, then his output goes low.
I wonder as I think this over if it's better to make 2 tanks. It seems easier to find a decent Arty in the academy than tanks.
I have Guderian on tank 1 and he is solid, but as you look at the choices, there really is no completely solid tank after him.
I have Mantstein .. .but his output drops like Patton
I have Patton.....his output drops
There is Montgomery....great survivability....but low output...and desert...oww
Vatutin.....slowwwwwwwwww
Rommel.....survivability....but desert...also bad
Timoshenko.....lower output
I am thinking of selling Patton to get Vatutin or Rommel....but even those two have weaknesses.

1 EC Tank is the best number you need for a perfect conclusion. With my strat I go the 2 Arty 1 Tank, for Arty Govorov and Konev for Alli Eras, and Tanks EC, Guderian, I have gotten the hang of redestributing generals depending on the situations well, one gen to tank dammage (tank) and two dammage dealers (arty)

Noone but I'd use Patton if I had to to clean up or to ease up the offensive because of his exsplosives but I have a bond with patton and stick with him just because he is my first gen to be remembred as I went into ET ganes blind.
But from the words from other expert players, Vatutin is the way to go
