Would anyone feel inclined to explain some of the lingo to someone who's too old to be playing these games please?
Are buffs and de-buffs the same thing, if not what's the difference?
TIA

Buffs -> any stats improvement or any unique improvements to your character. De-buffs -> any reversal from buffs. Your character is deprived of any stats improvements or unique improvements to the pre-buff situation.

Buff seems pretty straightforward then but I'm still struggling with the de-buff concept. Could it be summed up as anything that negatively affects ones stats/skills? As a practical example could leadership in EW5 be classed as a de-buff skill as it reduces the enemies attack?

I'll give some that are common in these kinds of games
"RNG" - Random number generator. Computer picks a random number.
"Dice Throw" - Any kind of RNG that is based off of absolute random, can also refer to actually throwing dice
"PC" - Player Character, also used to reference computer in shorthand.
"DC" - Difficulty Class. Seen a lot in Roleplaying Games. A good formula for DC is DC = PC Level + WIS + CHA, but this changes by game. This example has been used in KotOR, The Elder Scrolls, and others.
"Nerf" - A bit like the name suggests. When an update makes something less powerful. Originated by comparing debuffed weapons to nerf guns.
"Buff" - Positive effect, typically temporary
"Debuff" - Negative effect, typically temporary
"Lag" - This one is important to know, it does not, in fact, refer to low framerate, but rather refers to slow internet speed which causes objects requiring server connection to malfunction.
"Sprite" - A bitmap graphic, usually low resolution, that is used to represent an in-game item.
