I just started playing wc4 and what general will help me on throughout the missions?
(Excluding the generals like Eisenhower, Manstein and Zhukov)
I only have 700 medals.

You can earn a lot of medals early on by finding a way through some of the campaigns and conquest I recommend tank generals for starters look for armored assault, panzer leader, or land damage boost... like plains, forest, desert, and mountains.
Its better to try to aim for two good tank generals imo a fully upgraded vatutin and guderian could probably help you get rommel relatively early if you upgrade tank skills and the tree mainly armor and HP because the skills help you deal great damage.
Recommended skills: Two rumor generals I use them with artilery for 100% chance of success on attacks for your rumor which maxed at 75%.
Armored assault, raider, and accuracy great damage booster for free every attack.
All of the leader skills they come in handy for the damage but percentage is low early.
Explosives you will be attacking a lot of cities all the time very good skill
Crossfire and sailor great damage when it procs even more so with other skills.
The skill I like most is expensive but worth it it's wolfpack and crowd tactics it makes all the units in 1 range around yours do more damage and it feels like they take a little less damage to me.

I bought Messe and he is a decent general, I was surprised that he was able to withstand Guderian with a tier 2 heavy tank on the Battle of Kursk.

Messe is indeed a good general but he's a C or D to me. He's good for beginning but end-game he's as useless as Antonescu. You should save medals for Leeb, maybe even Vatutin. Go to the General Analytics and look for a general you may like  |
