Whenever you feel like it lol. Guderian would probably bee a good general to promote to increase his survivability. I honestly just like getting more generals than promoting

Earlier conquest era's and earlier campaigns might not require upgrading at all,but the late game sure does. 1960 and 1975 will severely punish players for having generals with weak health So I guess the answer is don't upgrade untill you feel your generals are not lasting long enough.

at a certain point when you have enough decent generals, promote the more powerful ones. by the way, DO NOT appoint tank generals or air generals in 1960 especially Europe, or you will be nuked.

Well i wouldn't say not to use them, they are actually quite effective because super tanks are availible everywhere. Putting your generals on a city is asking for thme to be nuked, but if they aren't they will normally be hit by missiles or other air attacks. Also if you have high health generals, They can normally survuve 1 or 2 nukes, and with air support even more.

I just let my generals strike into the enemy and they never get nuked. Maybe losing health to a certain amount will be safe for nukes?

I've discovered that the farther the general is from the front lines and the cities, the slimmer the chance of being nuked is. My strategy is to move my generals as far away as possible, and once I've taken all the missile bases in the area (Europe: Lyon, London, Berlin, etc.), the generals move in and crush any remaining resistance.

I usually try to capture missile bases and nuclear facilities ASAP. Moving my generals away from the front line, will not help in speeding up conquests
