I'm in a hunt for medals. Some time back I read a challenge by more experienced posters who proposed to get Guiderian as the first purchase, and I'm at 2147 medals now with zero spent for anything. While I have Pyramids I don't yet have Cuzco, (I need to search out the Wonders thread for how to get it.) All of my tech upgrades are at starting levels.
I played the bronze star campaign and got as far as 6 on both Axis and Allies, silver up to 5, (except for Fall Gelb,) and 4, and a couple of golds, but if it looks like I am not going to get three stars I restart the match. The point is, I was beginning to look for extra sources of medals, so I started clicking areond the map and saw an opportunity for Spain.
71 turns later, Victory! I attacked North Africa hard and meanwhile sent the starter Destroyers to the Gulf Of Mexico to capture the undefended port. My first crippled infantry unit followed the DDs. After Egypt fell I rammed everything through the Caucasuses and followed the Soviet conquest into Europe capturing injured cities from Russia. This gave me the cash I needed to build a navy in the Gulf and begin the conquest of North America while I crushed Asia. I left Britain to Germany until I had surplus from retaking Finland, and Germany did fine holding them back, but couldn't progress until I came in.
Emboldened from the victory, I decided to go smaller; what could be smaller than Hungary?
My intent was not to fight the Soviets head on, but to steal cities from Germany. I missed Yugoslavia, but I got all three Polish cities and Greece. Then I simply surrounded Soviet Rocket Artillery with Assault Infantry to lock them in place while I went around them with my attack forces. This neutered the Soviet offensive and cost me little besides units already wounded in other attacks. Again, I left Germany and Britain to waste their energy on each other, and actually used the army I used to capture India to go after North Africa.
Victory in 75 turns! (Alaska was last to fall.)
Paraspam never happened in either game. I pushed hard and fast into Russia before the Soviets had any success in Germany, and Britain balanced against Germany to keep them broke. I think I found the key to playing small, though. Don't fight head on; get behind and scoop up the easy pickings.
