In the game, the resecources we get turn from left to right on screenshot below, materials, industry, and knowledge. Population is a soft cap on how many units you can have. Go over population and your income will be much lowered
.We can see In the city we upgrade farms for population, market for materials, industrial zone for industry and university for knowledge.

When city is upgarded the income for all resources is increased. So besides the income from the buildings in the city, each city lvl also gives more income.

Clicking the blue spanner will open up the national technology screen. From what I can gather each row has 2 technologies and you can only pick one of them. You have to pick a technology from the bottom row before moving up to the next row. Here I pick one of the green technology and after 3 turns its unlocked and the blue technologies are avavilable.

In screenshot above I was playing as uk in conquest who already have high lvl buildings.
Here I start the first lvl of the campaign as USA and you can see the first 3 rows already have tech research but I can't research the 4th because I don't have capital at high enough lvl.

The military academy allows you to get and use what I would call special abilities. Higher lvls will increase the range of the military tactics and allow you to get more type of tactics

Here in my inventory I already start with 1 blast and 2 spy tactics. I use the military academy to get another blast tactic so now I have 2 blast.

Here I use the blast tactic. I am using the tactic from London. As you can see I can only reach Paris and Bruxelles because of the range. I can use my 2nd blast tactic on the same turn but I can't use it on the same city.

As long as there is a unit inside the city, it will slowly regenerate hp, with about 7hp a turn (or so).
