Everyone has been talking about what generals to buy, but I'm wondering if, especially for f2p people, upgrades to generals would never be considered (or buying items with medals)? at least until very late game. the increases are so minor, like +1% to something, for a sizeable fraction of the cost for a new general.
I feel the game has two aims: get stuck later, and have more fun per time but get up to being stuck faster, which form a catch 22. on wc4 i was reduced to just doing daily rewards being the best use of time quite regularly (my definition of stuck) even with investing in good generals.
if you want to get up to being stuck faster, then you spend medals as you get them so don't save up for more efficient but expensive generals. this might make upgrades beneficial. if however you want to prolong the slightly lower amount of fun you get out of the game for much longer (what I aim for), then saving for new generals seems like the absolute best strategy.
and of course spending IAPs probably makes it feasible.
this also applies to shop items IMO
So has anyone found any items or general upgrades to be worth it for non-spenders?

You can get everything in game (except IAP gens) by farming Sardina 1798 conquest (there is a guide, no gen no upgrade) hard enough. It gives you 10000 gold, 50 medals each time finish.

it still might take a long time until you can get up to the point where general upgrades are feasible though.

That's the only item I recommend buying. It makes everything slightly easier. This item is more significant in conquest.

I bought the ambulance and the artillery item that gives something like +20 battle ability and +5 artillery ability. Makes Kutuzov hit like a boulder. Edit: Its actually +10 battle ability and +25 artillery ability
