As you probably know by now, ET has increased the difficulty in cracking city HP.
In this game, a lvl 3 city can take quite a lot of effort by non-arty units to destroy. This, plus the high chance that enemy AI is gonna notice you & spawn something, makes it difficult to blitz through enemy territory (not to mention the high HP spammable inf).
Here's my trick, pray that: - You have at least 1 hex of your own territory that is 2 hexes away from your target enemy city. - Your city is at least lvl 3 (Trust me, it's not fun to use this on a lvl 1 or 2 city since city lvl impacts number of facilities that can be built). - You have ample metal/iron
What you have to do is... build the strongest fort you can build 2 hexes away from the target city. I'm not kidding, just spam forts & this will act as your cheap "arty". You can blast the enemy city to bits from afar & can also use it for defensive purposes.
Why is it called "cheap arty", you may be thinking. 1) The fort can act as an immobile & resilient arty unit. 2) It's cost in gold/coins in Conquest is relatively cheap compared to Campaign or Challenge. 3) It causes 135% dmg to city defence, as good or even better than arty.

I really forts on some conquests, their value shoots way up if you get a massive invasion, the AI usually ignore them unless there is no other target and you can hit a lot of units each turn.
Another plus for the forts as cheap artillery method is that we often end up with a surplus of metal so might as well spam forts on the larger towns since they don't deduct from population.
